Bonjour chers francophiles and welcome to our podcast, Brush Up Your Français with Prêt à Parler!

If you are new to this podcast, bienvenue!

I’m Isabelle Nicolas, the founder and CEO of Prêt à Parler. Back in 2015, I had the idea to create Zoom-powered private French tuition and Prêt à Parler has since become Switzerland’s leading online French language school.

Let’s start this week’s episode with our Super Profs Brice and Sandra with On en parle (Let’s talk about it!).

Today, they will be talking about la motivation lorsqu’on apprend une langue, i.e. how to stay motivated when learning a new language?

Allez, On en parle avec Brice et Sandra!

Sandra : Bonjour Brice

Brice : Bonjour Sandra, bonjour tout le monde.

Sandra : Oui, bonjour tout le monde et bienvenu tous dans « On en parle » avec Brice et Sandra et aujourd’hui Brice nous parlons de la rentrée scolaire.

Brice : Oui, exact, septembre c’est le synonyme de la rentrée. Est-ce que toi tu as apprécié retourner à l’école quand tu étais plus jeune ?

Sandra : Alors oui, moi j’étais vraiment impatiente de retourner à l’école parce que les vacances c’étaient très long tout de même et puis on pouvait revoir des copains et des copines. Et pour toi ?

Brice : Pour moi c’est peut-être le contraire, je n’étais pas impatient, même si c’est vrai, on retrouve les amis. Non, c’était plus tôt des sentiments un peu mixtes, un peu triste de la fin de vacances et parce que pendant deux mois, parfois un peu plus, je m’étais habitué je crois à un rythme sans classes et sans cours et c’est vrais que j’ai apprécié aussi ça.

Sandra : D’accord, donc tu avais les blues de fan des vacances.

Brice : Oui, c’est ça, un peu, c’est vrai, c’est vrai.

Sandra : D’accord. Et dis-moi, qu’est-ce que tu faisais, la première chose que tu faisais le premier jour de la rentrée en classe ?

Brice : C’était peut-être pas quelque chose que je faisais, c’était quelque chose que j’attendais, c’était de voir la tête et le nom de mes nouveaux profs.

Sandra : Ah oui.

Brice : Au collège et au lycée c’était toujours un peu le moment de suspense, de savoir quel professeur nous allions avoir. Donc, oui, je pense que c’était oui, cette attente aussi. Et toi ?

Sandra : Oui, moi aussi et de savoir aussi dans quelle classe et avec quels amis en fait on allait être puisque ça changeait quand même beaucoup par rapport à des choix tes matières que tu as étudié.

Brice : C’est vrai.

Sandra : Et alors, est-ce que tu as eu des très bons profs ou des profs très terribles ?

Brice : Oui, je crois qu’on a tous de souvenirs d’un professeur ou une professeure qui nous a marqué je crois pendant notre scolarité c’était peut-être un professeur d’histoire-géographie, très passionné par son métier en effet et ses cours étaient génial en effet, on avait l’impression de voyager un petit peu avec lui dans le temps et pendant une heure de classe on était un petit peu transportés, et c’est vrai que c’était un très bon souvenir et une très bonne année. Du coup on avait tous une bonne note parce qu’il nous donnait un peu cette motivation aussi. Et toi ?

Sandra : Super. Oui, moi aussi c’était, ce n’était pas un prof d’histoire, mais, c’étaient un prof d’anglais en fait, anglais, section Euro, donc, c’était Anglais un peu spécialité au lysée et c’était un anglo-suisse en effet et il était très passionné, et vraiment il nous a donné des cours un peu comme à l’université déjà ou c’était plus des cours ou nous parlions et échangions plus tôt que toujours écrire. Nous avons eu tous des très bonnes notes au bac.

Brice : C’est vrai que ça joue beaucoup le professeur, c’est essentiel, un bon professeur c’est très important.

Sandra : En parlant de rentré, j’ai une dernière question, par rapport à la fourniture,  est-ce que tu as souvent cassé des règles ? Parce que moi c’était tous les ans j’ai cassé toujours ma règle en fait.

Brice : C’est vrai, j’ai réservé une règle au plastique chez toi. Non, par contre, je ne sais pas si tu t’es souviens mais, on utilisait beaucoup, peut-être au collège, les stylos à encre.

Sandra : Ah oui, les stylos plumes.

Brice : Oui, les stylos plumes et du coup moi j’utilisais beaucoup les effaceurs.

Sandra : Ah oui, ça ne sentait pas bon en plus.

Brice : Oui, je ne sais pas comment je faisais, mais, je passais énormément d’effaceur peut-être parce que je faisais beaucoup de fautes.

Sandra : Et oui, les stylos comme ça à ancre, les stylos aux plumes pour pouvoir écrire en calligraphie, j’avais oublié ça.

Brice : Oui, c’était dans les petits classer du collège, dans 6èmme ou 5èmme, je crois en effet un peu l’obligation c’était les stylos plumes.

Sandra : Ah oui.

Brice : C’était les effaceurs aux stylos spéciaux qui permettaient d’effacer l’ancre et de réécrire.

Sandra : Oui, réécrire par-dessous. Ce n’était pas très joli mais bon.

Brice : Non, non, c’est vrai que c’était très moche, mais bon. Bien bon, merci à toi Sandra

Sandra : Merci Brice

Today I'm not going to sing, but rather talk to you about ... motivation! How do we keep our motivation when we learn a new language? Well, to answer that question, I would like to share with you a little real story, that is, my personal experience. I learned German and Italian when I was at university, studying classical singing, but it was only theoretical. It was really when I studied in Florence, Italy, that I got the chance to practice my Italian. I had no choice, because in order for the locals to understand me, I had to use my Italian, even though it was very basic! The same goes for German. I lived almost 4 years in Munich, Germany, and the first year was the most difficult for me, because everything I had learned theoretically disappeared from my head as soon as I tried to speak German. I had a big block on this language and I was afraid of making mistakes and being laughed at.

I really realized that without fluency in the language, my life and, above all, my integration into my new country would be superficial.

What motivated me to persevere and not give up? Set me goals! I gave myself:

• 3 months to master the basic language in order to use it in my daily life: at the bakery, the supermarket, in the metro, at the doctor's, at the post office, etc.
• 6 months to talk more confidently about anything and everything with my German friends and make some little jokes
• 12 months to succeed in communicating and working almost exclusively in basic German, i.e. around A2 level.

Another thing that helped me a lot to keep my motivation was participating in language exchanges, or Stammtisch, in German. With other learners and native speakers, we would meet in a bar or restaurant and talk about anything and everything for about an hour. My regular presence and my sincere commitment have also greatly contributed to my progress!

So, the key to success and progress when learning a foreign language is to invest and persevere, even when you feel that you are stagnating or even regressing, because it happens, that too! Taking lessons with other learners of the same level and under the wing of a caring, motivating and interesting teacher, that also changes!

Chères auditrices, chers auditeurs…c’est la rentrée pour beaucoup d’entre vous ou enfin les vacances ?

Le mot mystère de ce mois-ci est très chic ! Ecoutez-bien (Listen carefully) :

Sur la tête, en tissu ou en paille pour l’été, en cuir (leather), en laine ou en velours pour l’hiver, il fait toujours de l’effet !

Partout dans le monde, il permet aux femmes et aux hommes de se protéger du soleil, de travailler pour leur plaisir au jardin ou très durement dans les champs (fields).

La reine Elisabeth II l’aime sous toutes les formes, sous toutes les couleurs et toujours très chics !

Les lords anglais le portent « haut de forme » et John Steed, célèbre agent secret britannique (à la télévision !) l’aimait rond comme un melon !

Dans la bonne société, les messieurs très polis le soulèvent (lift) de leur tête pour saluer les dames et celles-ci le transportent dans des boîtes en carton (cardboards) pour ne pas les abîmer (damage). A la fin du 19^ème siècle en France, les impressionnistes l’adoptent et on l’appelle « canotier » (boateur). Il est en paille (straw) et il est synonyme de détente, de dimanche entre amis. Il est idéal pour une balade en « canot » (small boat) sur la Marne si vous aimez…ramer (row).

Les cowboys l’ont aussi adopté pour son côté viril mais aussi pour se protéger du soleil et de la poussière (dust). Il leur sert même à prendre de l’eau à la rivière !

En Amérique latine, il est connu sous le nom de « Panama » et peut s’acheter très cher et se rouler dans un tube pour le transport !

A la mer, à la montagne ou à la campagne, il est très apprécié pour se protéger de la chaleur et l’hiver pour affronter (face) le froid ou la pluie !

Enfin, une chanson un peu bêbête (silly) a rendu hommage à celui de Zozo dans les années 30. Elle est chantée par Maurice Chevalier, un beau et élégant crooner français.

« Avez-vous le nouveau……de Zozo, c’est un …….rigolo (funny) !

Bien sûr, vous connaissez ce mot : chapeau ! (hat)
