Bonjour chers francophiles and welcome to our podcast, Brush Up Your Français with Prêt à Parler!

I’m Isabelle Nicolas, the founder and CEO of Prêt à Parler.
As a native Québécoise, born to a Franco-Belgian family, now living in Geneva, Switzerland with my two toddlers, I am no stranger to the expat and the busy parent reality!
Trained as a professional opera singer, my passion for arts and languages led me to become an ambassador of the French language & francophone culture, i.e. a French Teacher!

Let’s start this week’s episode with our Super Profs Brice and Sandra and our first chronique called On en parle (Let’s talk about it!).
Today, they will be talking about l’été, i.e. the summer.

Allez, On en parle avec Brice et Sandra!
Sandra: Salut Brice, comment ça va ?
Brice : Salut Sandra, ça va, et toi ?
Sandra : Très bien, très bien
Brice : Bienvenu à tous sur notre petite rubrique de ‘’on en parle’’ avec Sanda et Brice et aujourd’hui on va vous parler de quoi Sandra ?
Sandra : On va vous parler de l’été. Alors Brice, qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire en été ?
Brice : Moi, en général, l’été, j’aime partir dans le sud de la France, dans le sud-ouest ou sur la côte Méditerranée. Mais, oui, en général ce sont mes destinations en France quand ce n’est pas à l’étranger mais au soleil les vacances d’été pour moi c’est au soleil et ce n’est pas la montagne. Et toi ?
Sandra : Alors, moi c’est un peu l’envers. Moi je viens du Nord de la France, donc, le soleil et la chaleur je n’aime pas trop, donc, moi, souvent les vacances sont dans des pays du Nord comme en Ecosse, en Irlande, ou même en Finlande. J’essaye d’aller à la fraicheur.
Brice : Oui, c’est clair. Et tu as un programme pour cette année ?
Sandra : Alors, pour cette année, oui, je vais peut-être retourner en Ecosse à Glasgow. Et toi, qu’est-ce que tu vas faire ?
Brice : Moi, cette année je vais dans le sud-ouest, je vais entre le Pays Basque et Bordeaux. Je vais partir entre Biarritz et Bordeaux à l’océan Atlantique
Sandra : Ah, super, est qu’est –ce que tu vas faire la bas ? Est-ce que tu vas aller participer à des festivals ou aller à des concerts ?
Brice : Non, je ne vais pas participer à des festivals, je vais partir avec des amis, et on a loué une maison et je pense qu’on va profiter de l’océan, on va faire des balades, on va surement aller aux restaurants, faire des barbecues, des apéros tous ensemble. Donc, non, pas de festivals, mais je pense que nous allons faire plus des activités en petits groupes. Et toi ? Qu’est-ce que tu vas faire ?
Sandra : Alors, moi je vais partir avec mon mari et comme toi, nous allons aller aux restaurants, et nous allons profiter un peu de la vie et nous allons faire beaucoup de randonnés, je pense que nous allons grimper la montagne Loch Lomond Encore une fois qui est à côté de Glasgow. Alors, pas de festivals, mais il y a des festivals en Suisse qui sont ouverts cet été.
Brice : Oui, tu as raison, tu connais un en particulier ?
Sandra : Alors oui, il y a le festival de ‘’Montreux jazz’’ festival qui se tient cette année du 2 au 17 juillet.
Brice : Oui, c’est un festival, festival de jazz, le ‘’Montreux jazz’’ et il y aura différents artistes je crois, c’est populaire ce festival, il a y beaucoup de monde qui y participe ?
Sandra : Ah oui, c’est très populaire, c’est la 55èmme édition, donc, en effet il y a beaucoup de grands noms qui vont participer à ce festival.
Brice : Est-ce que tu penses que tu vas aller à ce festival ?
Sandra : Cela peut dépendre, je ne sais pas si je serai en Suisse en ce moment -à mais si je suis de la côté de la Suisse, je pense que oui, j’irai voir ‘’Montreux jazz’’ festival. Et toi ?
Brice : Non, je ne pense pas parce que je vais rester en France, je ne pense pas aller à l’étranger mais c’est vrai que la Suisse et proche de Lyon et comme j’habite à Lyon, mais non, pas de festival pour moi cette année je crois.

Now, let’s move on to the next chronique, The French Sounds of Music. Together, we will look at a famous or not so famous French songs.
I’ll give you a few pronunciation hacks which, I hope, will help you feel more confident when you speak French in the future. Remember that I am also a professional opera singer so I looove everything which is related to diction!
In this episode, we are going to talk about something which is very summery, so we're talking about l’été, and so today we will look at the famous 60’s French song, Itsi Bitsi, petit bikini. This is the French version, yes you are right, of Brian Hyland’s Itsy Bitsie Tiny Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. That's the right one.
You probably have already heard how the music goes so it should be a bit easier for you to align the French words into the music. My mom and I absolutely adore Dalida, the singer who made this song popular in the francophone world. We will share with you the link to her YT video so you can listen to her beautiful rendition later, if you feel like it. And there will be in the transcript of this week’s episode, on our website.
If you listen to her version of this song, you will notice that she rolls her “r”s when she sings French. Usually that's not typical, we don't really roll or flip our "r"s when we speak French. So that shows that she was not a native French speaker, but rather Egypt born from Italian parents, therefore, her mother tongue was Italian, and that's why we heard her rolling her "r"s.
Dalida was an incredible French singer and actress,she sang in 10 languages, she is the most internationally successful French performer of all time. So if you've never heard of her name, discuss it with your parents, I'm sure they've heard of her. She was really popular in the 60s, 70s, 80s and she passed away in 1987, very sadly.
So, let’s go back to her “r”s, to our "r"s! In this podcast I will refer to three types of “R”s:
First one: there's the flipped one, so that's just a little flick of the tongue. So let's say if we say the word Regarde. If it's a rolled one, it's a longer vibration. And then we have the beautiful French R which is always a bit of a hurdle to pronounce if you're a foreigner. Especially if that sound doesn't exist in your mother tongue. Let me help you with that.
So, the French "R" is a little bit like a very very soft, calm, quiet, no tension gargle. So everybody has probably gargled in their life. You put a bit of water in your throat and you don't swallow it, you just let it roll in your throat. I invite you to try it at home, try to gargle. This little tiny sound that you produced is where the French "R" is.
And then you might hear Edith Piaf's "La vie en rose", like a fatty "R", so really rolling fattening sound. So "non, rien de rien", and that's the "R" grasse, which is not what we use on a daily basis as native French speakers, but it's been made very popular by Edith Piaf.
In this episode we will on the regular French "r" Let's look at the text together, the text of Itsy Bitsy Bikini. We'll put special focus on the French "r" today. We won’t have time to analyse the meaning of all the words in this text, so I invite you to check our website for the transcript of this episode and the English translation of the French lyrics. So let's move to the lyrics of the Itsy Bitsy Bikini.

There you go. We will start with the first "Couplet". So a Couplet is a verse. Let's read it together.
Sur une plage, il y avait une belle fille
Qui avait peur d'aller prendre son bain
Elle craignait de quitter sa cabine
Elle tremblait de montrer aux voisins
1, 2, 3, elle tremblait de montrer quoi ?
So you can notice that I've put some color codes, if you don't see it I invite you to look at our episode which will be shared on our social media where you will have accompanying video if you're listening on the podcast, we will share the page to the Google doc. And some "r"s are highlighted in green, which means green light, you can pronounce these and some others are highlighted in red which means Watch out, don't pronounce these ones.
So as a general rule, if a verb ends in ER we don't hear the R, we only hear the sound E, like café, aller, quitter, montrer, so we don't hear the final R. However, if you have a consonant, and then R, your "r" will be a little bit stronger. So, craignait, tremblait, and that comes from the emotion which goes hand in hand with these words. So trembler means to be afraid of something, and tremblait is to tremble and to be really afraid.

Voila, that was the first couplet, let's go to the famous chorus, or le refrain in French.

Un bikini rouge et jaune à p'tits pois
1, 2, 3, voilà ce qui arriva !
So, important here for the meaning, we're talking about p'tits pois. So for those who are foodies, you know that p'tits pois are generally green peas, but in this situation it means something else. It means polka dots. So little or small polka dots. And in the French version it's red and yellow small polka dots bikini. Alors, on va chanter, ensemble.

Qu'elle mettait pour la première fois
Un itsi bitsi teenie weenie, tout petit petit bikini
Un bikini rouge et jaune à p'tits pois

Second couplet, second verse

Car elle craignait de choquer ses voisines
Et même aussi, de gêner ses voisins

Here let's look at the soung GN. It's a little bit like when you say song. So the "gn" is the same as the "ng" in English. So whenever you see it think about the opposite. Peignoir, song, peignoir, song, craignait. That should help you. Alright, let's sing!

Elle s'enroula dans son peignoir de bain
Car elle craignait de choquer ses voisines
Et même aussi, de gêner ses voisins
1, 2, 3, elle craignait de montrer quoi ?
Un peu plus vite! Let's go a little faster, you know this far

This is the last verse, le dernier couplet
Elle doit maintenant s'élancer hors de l'ombre
Elle craint toujours les regards zzz indiscrets
C'est le moment de faire voir à tout le monde
Ce qui la trouble et qui la fait trembler
1, 2, 3, elle a peur de montrer quoi ?
Here we will focus on that little liaison. If you have a word which ends in "s", like a plural form of a word, here it's les regards normally when it's tensed by itself you will never pronounce the final "s", it's silent. But, if this word is followed by another word which starts with a vowel, like here we have "indiscrets" indiscrete, "indiscrets" starts with the vowel "i", then you will have to do a liaison, to connect the words so there's a nice flow in French, and so the "s" will transform itself into a little "z". And you wanna hear that when you sing this verse. C'est parti? Aller, on y va!

Mais même si vous ne partez pas, le mot mystère de ce mois-ci est là pour vous ressourcer.

Parfois elle danse, parfois elle se repose. Parfois, elle se retire (withdraws), parfois elle monte.
La lune aime l’éclairer. Le soleil aime la réchauffer. La regarder, nous redonne de l’énergie. La caresser, nous rafraichit.
Elle est la demeure de beaucoup d’espèces d’animaux et de plantes qui y naissent et s’y amusent, se rencontrent ou s’avalent (swalow each other) ! Elle renferme aussi des trésors oubliés et même…des coffres (trunks) remplis de bijoux, parait-il !
C’est aussi une grande dame capricieuse qui peut se fâcher (be angry) et il faut être courageux pour la dompter (tame) car elle nous regarde avec son oeil noir ! Elle peut faire chavirer (capsize) les bateaux et mettre nos vies en danger si on est imprudents.
Les poètes la célèbrent depuis toujours et comme dit la chanson de Charles Trenet, grand chanteur français, elle a « des reflets d’argent ».
Elle aime caresser le sable, les galets (stones) ou les rochers. Elle est présente sur tous les continents.
Il faut la préserver, la soigner et la respecter car elle nous donne tant de merveilles et de bonheur ! N’oubliez pas qu’elle ne mange ni plastique ni goudron !
Elle est salée, elle est parfois très chaude ou très froide et si vous ne savez pas nager, vous pouvez tout simplement admirer toutes ses nuances de bleu et de vert. Vous pouvez aussi la respirer sur le pont d’un bateau.
