Bonjour chers francophiles and welcome to our podcast, Brush Up Your Français with Prêt à Parler!

If you are new to this podcast, bienvenue!

I’m Isabelle Nicolas, the founder and CEO of Prêt à Parler.

As a native Québécoise, born to a Franco-Belgian family, now living in Geneva, Switzerland with my two toddlers, I am no stranger to the expat and the busy parent reality!

Trained as a professional opera singer, my passion for the arts and languages led me to become an ambassador of the French language & francophone culture, i.e. a French Teacher!

Let’s start this week’s episode with our Super Profs Brice and Sandra with On en parle (Let’s talk about it!).

Today, they will be talking about les amis internationaux, i.e. international friends.

Again, if you are of level A1 and above, this chronique will be very useful for you especially to improve your comprehension skills and vocabulary.

Allez, On en parle avec Brice et Sandra!

Brice : Bonjour tout le monde, bonjour à tous. Salut Sandra, ça va ?

Sandra : Salut Brice, oui bonjour à tous, je vais très bien, et toi ?

Brice : Impeccable, tout va très bien, on est toujours très content de refaire ce petit podcast.

Sandra : Et oui, merci de nous retrouver dans ‘’On en parle ‘’ avec Brice et Sandra. Aujourd’hui, nous parlons de l’amitié.

Brice : Absolument, c’est un thème du notre mois de juillet, on va parler des amis, et des amis des nationalités différentes en tout cas différentes de la nôtre. Est-ce que tu as des amis toi qui ne sont pas français ?

Sandra : Alors oui Brice, je pense que la majorité de mes amis en fait ne sont pas français et ne sont pas francophones non plus.

Brice : C’est génial. Et est-ce que c’est un avantage ?

Sandra : Alors, oui, c’est un avantage parce que grâce à eux, j’ai appris d’autres langues, donc j’ai ma meilleure amie qui est allemande et qui m’a appris quelques bases et j’ai un autre ami qui est japonais, et qui m’a aussi appris à me présenter en japonais. C’est important.

Brice : Donc, avoir des amis de nationalité différente c’est bien pour apprendre des autres langues alors.

Sandra : C’est vrai et moi je vous conseille de vous faire des amis français ou francophone à tous ceux qui écoutaient ce podcast, vous allez apprendre du français.

Brice : C’est vrai, c’est un très bon moyen pour pratiquer son français et apprendre des nouvelles phrases, des expressions idiomatiques, toujours, un très bon moyen pour développer votre français, c’est vrai.

Sandra : Tout à fait, alors, toi Brice, est-ce que tu as des amis de nationalité différente ?

Brice : Oui, j’ai des amis qui sont anglais, parce que j’habitais en Angleterre pendant quelques années et j’ai aussi des amis qui sont espagnols.

Sandra : Espagnole, est-ce que tu sais parler Espagnol ?

Brice : Oui, je parle aussi espagnol, et j’aime pratiquer justement mon espagnol avec mes amis qui sont espagnols aussi parce que je ne veux pas perdre mon niveau d’espagnol. En ce moment, je parle je pense mieux en anglais, donc, si je ne pratique pas l’espagnol, je vais perdre mon niveau de langue je pense.

Sandra : C’est vrai, c’est important de toujours pratiquer et surtout pour le français, nous pouvons en parler, il faut pratiquer le français souvent pour ne pas le perdre. Alors, Brice, c’est vrai, tu as des amis, mais il y a différents types d’amis, n’est pas ? Il y a des meilleurs amis, des connaissances, des amis, des collègues.

Brice : C’est vrai, absolument, il existe plusieurs catégories d’amis, tu as raison, les amis d’enfance, les meilleurs amis, aussi c’est vrai, en général,  est-ce que tu as un ou une meilleure ami tu as dit juste ton amie allemande c’est ta seule meilleure amie ?

Sandra : Oui, c’est la seule meilleure amie, mais vraiment la meilleure devant tous les autres, loin devant tous les autres, c’est ma confidente, je la considère comme mon amie la plus proche et je l’ai rencontré en Erasmus.

Brice : D’accord, en Allemagne ?

Sandra : Non, en effet au Pays de Galles. Nous étudions la linguistique en ce moment-là.

Brice : Donc, tu parles anglais avec elle ?

Sandra : On se parle surtout en anglais oui, mais elle parle un petit peu le français, et moi je parle un tout petit peu l’allemand. Donc, nous apprenons. Et toi, est-ce que tu as un meilleur ami ou des meilleurs amis ?

Brice : Oui, j’en ai surtout un ou deux, mais ils sont français, ils ne sont pas anglais, espagnols ou d’une autre nationalité, non, ils sont français.

Sandra : D’accord

Brice : Je les connais depuis plusieurs années maintenant oui, c’est vrai, c’est vrai. Bon, parfait, est-ce que tu as d’autres questions Sandra ?

Sandra : Alors, non, pas vraiment, je pense que nous pouvons nous arrêter ici.

Brice : Parfait,  ben écoute, nous vous retrouvons tous dans notre nouveau podcast la semaine prochaine, merci à toi Sandra.

Now, let’s move on to the next chronique, which is mine, The French Sounds of Music. As some of you already know, I'm an opera singer, a professional one, and I looove everything related to diction. So together, we will look at another famous French song and I’ll give you a few pronunciation hacks which I hope, will help you feel more confident when you speak and sing in French in the future.

So today we will look at the famous 1971's French song, "Le temps est bon", originally sung by Quebec singer Isabelle Pierre and recently remixed by the great French musical collective Bon entendeur. So this goes well with our topic of today, Les amis internationaux.

I have to say I had no idea this singer was from Quebec, until I made the research for this podcast! And as I'm also from Quebec I thought that's very interesting, so I looked into her a little bit and she was, Isabelle Pierre was a singer, a TV host, an illustrator and a writer for cartoons, so she was quite eclectic in all her skills.

If you listen to a francophone radio like Radio Lac or NRJ Leman, you will most probably hear this new version at some point during the day. It's really good, really catchy, you will learn it very quickly and that's why I chose it, it's not too difficult, the words are quite easy to remember as well cause it comes back a lot.

If you listen to the original 1971 version, it is a bit slower, and there is a more recent one which is more upbeat, and that's the Bon entendeur remix, so if you want to listen to these two videos I'll be sharing the link to the Youtube videos so you can listen to these beautiful renditions later if you feel like it. This will be in the transcript of this week's episode on our website.

Again we won't have time to analyse the meaning of all the words in this text, so I invite you to check our website, check the transcript of this episode and the English translation will be there of the French lyrics.

So, this week, let’s focus our attention on the French nasal sounds, these tricky but oh super important sounds if you want to improve your French pronunciation! I'm going to share my screen for those who are following us on Youtube and if you're not on Youtube and you're listening to our podcast check our website so you can follow with the transcript.

Alors, on va commencer, Le temps est bon par Isabelle Pierre.

So let's first look at the nasal sounds. We have the first one which is -an. Think of an -a sound, but you put  some nasals on it, as if you're pinching your nose like this. So you wanna see the sound -a, but you pinch your nose and you make it nasal. So now you can say le temps, which is a part of that song.

Then there is the -on, like bon. Think of an -o, but then you pinch your nose and it sounds like o. That's the French -o. Bon, which means good, le temps est bon. So it's a very very very close, at the beginning you might not even hear the difference. But the more you practice the more you will feel the little difference, and that's the beauty of learning a new language. You're learning something you had never thought about before.

And in the last nasal sound, usually there are two, there's the -in and the -un. But for many people, depending on the region where you're from in the francophone world, it's the same sound. So where I'm from in Quebec we make a distinction, but I have a few friends and some teachers at Prêt à Parler who  will pronounce this exactly the same. So if you have -in or -un it will sound -in/-un for both.

Let's see, le vin, everybody knows how to say wine in French; le vin rouge, le vin blanc. This is the sound you want to go for - think vin... There's no better way to explain it, listen to the sound of le vin, a French person saying le vin and try to find where it sits. If I tell you, let's say, think about the sound -in/-um with nasal it wouldn't really work, so think of le vin.

Let's start with this beautiful song, we will look at the first chorus, alors, le premier refrain, because that's what comes back all the time. Alors,

Le temps est bon, Le ciel est bleu
J'ai deux amis qui sont aussi mes amoureux
Le temps est bon, Le ciel est bleu
Nous n'avons rien à faire, rien que d'être heureux

Ah, such a beautiful song! Alors, on va chanter. In the version of Isabelle Pierre it's a little bit slower, so we'll go slowly to start. So you do the little liaison between the -ien, it's almost a -y in English. I hope this is helpful for you. So I'm going to start with a little musical intro so you get used to the song and it's a dam-dam-taram

Le temps est bon, Le ciel est bleu,
J'ai deux amis qui sont aussi mes amoureux
Le temps est bon, Le ciel est bleu,
Nous n'avons rien à faire, rien que d'être heureux

Voila, so that's the first refrain, or chorus, so you got a little bit more used to the sound of the music. And now we will look at the verses, so the couplet.

Mon cœur est grand, grand, grand, grand,
Comme le vent
Et je suis douce comme l'eau,
Et je suis tendre, tendre, tendre, tendre
Pour mes amants
Je suis la fleur dans leur cerveaux

Here you have the word tender, so you want to sound tender, tendre, and therefore you won't pronounce the -dre too strong. It's as if you just drop it at the end of the word. And a little trick when you speak French, the -t's are very different from the ones in English. So the -t's in English are really wet, there's a little bit of wetness when you say -t. And in French, it is not like that. The placement of the -t is different. It's as if in English it's the tip of the tongue which creates the sound -t, and it French it's a little bit behind.

That's for more advanced French learners, perhaps. Alors, on va chanter, let's sing!

Mon cœur est grand, grand, grand, grand
Comme le vent
Et je suis douce comme l'eau
Et je suis tendre, tendre, tendre, tendre
Pour mes amants

Let's go back to the refrain

Le temps est bon, Le ciel est bleu

It's a good time to practice your French -r's. If you don't know how to create a French -r, listen to the previous episode where I'm sharing my tips on how to pronounce the -r. Last verse, le dernier refrain

So here we have a few -ants and a few -on, let's practice this.

Ah, quelle belle chanson, n’est-ce pas? What a beautiful song, wasn’t it? I love that song, I love the slower version from the 70s, and I really like the more upbeat one. You should the video clip, it's really beautiful as well.

Comme j’ai gardé mon côté enfant, je ne résiste pas à vous parler de ce festival qui a attiré mon attention : celui de Crans-Montana, dans le canton du Valais en Suisse, qui se déroule du 15 au 28 juillet et qui s’appelle Am Stram Gram ! Quelle chouette idée d’avoir imaginé un festival familial où petits et grands peuvent se retrouver et partager des moments inoubliables. Prenez des notes, la liste des loisirs est longue : manèges, activités sportives, ateliers de maquillage, de menuiserie (carpentry), de cuisine, de jonglage (juggling), de slackline (vous avez déjà testé votre équilibre en essayant de marcher sur un fil ? C’est le moment ! La rigolade est assurée ! (guaranteed fun !). Un univers ludique mais aussi culturel avec de nombreux concerts et spectacles pour toute la famille !

L’été rime aussi avec bien-être. C’est vrai que c’est la saison idéale pour se ressourcer, s’étonner soi-même en essayant un cours de yoga, de tai chi ou de Qi Gong. Où que vous soyez, je suis sûre qu’il y a un parc près de chez vous ou sur votre lieu de vacances où vous pourrez vous lancer. Les bénéfices ? Le coup de foudre pour une activité que vous aurez envie d’approfondir, de nouvelles rencontres et la perspective d’un hiver plus détendu !

Vous êtes cinéphiles ? Alors, l’été est aussi fait pour vous ! Si vous êtes de passage à Paris, vous pourrez vous diriger vers une salle obscure du Quartier Latin où subsistent encore des petits cinémas indépendants. Vous serez au frais pour revoir les grands classiques ! Mais si vous adorez le cinéma en plein air, ne ratez pas celui de la Villette. Il dure un mois (du 16 juillet au 22 août). Bien calés dans votre transat, vous pourrez voir ou revoir le magnifique film de Sofia Coppola sur la vie de Marie Antoinette. Vous savez, ce film, où l’on aperçoit une paire de baskets (d’une marque très célèbre) perdues au milieu d’escarpins de soie ? Culte !
